Slight adjustment brings totality to Larchmont

It took moving Heaven and Earth, literally, but the Library has arranged that the Path of Totality for the April 8 eclipse is adjusted to the south slightly. Now Larchmonters will see the Moon cover the Sun entirely instead of just the 90% originally predicted. “We had so many people come to the Library’s front lawn to watch the 2017 eclipse, and it was only 70%. We wanted to really wow them this time,” said Library Director Laura Eckley.
Head of Reference Liam Hegarty stressed that the only time the eclipse can be safely viewed without eye protection is during the period of total darkness when the sun is entirely obscured by the Moon. During the period leading up to totality and then after totality, the sun is not so bright that you have to instinctively look away, but it is bright enough to permanently damage your vision. Hegarty said the Library has a limited supply of glasses that meet the requirements of ISO 12312-2, Filters for Direct Observation of the Sun. The Library is giving away one pair per family leading up to the eclipse and will have more available at the Library during the event. “Stop by the Information Desk,” he said.

Hegarty still seemed slightly stunned at the sudden shift in the Path of Totality. “I still don’t understand how she got it moved all the way down here,” he muttered.

“It helps to know the right people,” Eckley said. “I’m just disappointed with our shorter 1 minute 27 second period when the eclipse is total. Buffalo gets 3 minutes 45 seconds. I want to know what Buffalo has got that Larchmont hasn’t.” Eckley said the eclipse is still a week away and she hasn’t given up hope that she can get the Path of Totality moved even further south.
