Every Fall, libraries across the nation observe Banned Books Week. This is an opportunity to celebrate our freedom to read by highlighting books that some people think you shouldn’t be allowed to read. 2023 has seen an unprecedented surge in book challenges particularly in public libraries. Now open until October 30th. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark 1961 and educated at the Royal Danish Design school for drawing and graphics. Sine Hjort became active in the alternative rock scene and ultimately came to New York to work as a musician. The President of the Westchester Amateur Astronomers, Karen Seiter, will give a timely lecture about eclipses Tuesday night at 7pm. Eleven days later, there will be a partial solar eclipse here where approximately 20% of the Sun will be covered by the moon. Next Spring, however, will be the big one. Although it will be a total eclipse in upstate New York, 90% of the Sun will be covered here. Looking directly at the Sun leads to blindness, so Ms. Seiter will also explain how to observe eclipses safely. Ms Cannavò’s favorite thing to do when she isn’t working is read and her favorite book is The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, a frequently banned book. Ms Cannavò was surprised to hear that her other favorites, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood have also been challenged!
