Slight adjustment brings totality to Larchmont

Slight adjustment brings totality to Larchmont

It took moving Heaven and Earth, literally, but the Library has arranged that the Path of Totality for the April 8 eclipse is adjusted to the south slightly. Now Larchmonters will see the Moon cover the Sun entirely instead of just the 90% originally predicted. “We had so many people come to the Library’s front lawn to watch the 2017 eclipse, and it was only 70%. We wanted to really wow them this time,” said Library Director Laura Eckley. Read More Read More

Simple adjustment saves Hold Shelf!

Simple adjustment saves Hold Shelf!

The Library has dropped the first letter from some patron’s last names. These patrons, whose last name formerly began with the letters M or S, are now in the first half of the alphabet (A – K). This change addressed a dangerous unbalance on the Hold Shelf where the number of patrons whose last name begins with a letter in the first half of the alphabet (A through K) were far outnumbered by those in the back half (L through Z). This uneven distribution of names caused an uneven distribution of the weight of the total books on the Holds Shelf.Read More Read More

Trivia Team Finds Fault with Friends

Trivia Team Finds Fault with Friends

A trivia team’s refusal to accept the results of the Friends of the Larchmont Public Library‘s Trivia Contest last year may jeopardize this year’s event on April 4. The dispute began with the tie-breaking question, “Who was the first man on the moon?” The winning team answered Neil Armstrong. The losing team protested, stating there was no correct answer because no one has ever landed on the Moon. “Everyone knows the Moon landing was faked. NASA knew it was impossible, so they hired Stanley Kubrick to make it look good,” said Trivia Loser and Head of Reference Liam Hegarty.Read More Read More

Friends ease gift-giving stress

Finding the right gift can be stressful. Nothing is better than a book, obviously, but which book? To aid your decision the Board of the Friends of the Larchmont Public Library created an extensive list of suggestions for all ages. The list contains 18 Adult tiles suggested by individual Board members and 12 Young Adult and Children’s books suggested by Barbara Mehlman, a Board member who also happens to be a school library media specialist. The Friends do way more than make gift suggestions, however. Funding from the Friends underwritesRead More Read More

Vote411.org replaces printed Voter Guides

The League of Women Voters of Westchester is no longer printing out physical (paper) Voter Guides. As you might recall, these handy booklets contained useful information about upcoming elections such as polling station locations, ballot initiatives, candidates, etc.
Now, voters are encouraged to visit the League of Women Voters’ national website, www.Vote411.org. If you enter your home address, you can view your polling location as well as election deadlines and a full list of current races. You can also print a list of your potential votes/candidates to bring with you on election day.Read More Read More

As seen on TV – and elsewhere

As seen on TV – and elsewhere

About a week ago, we put up a post on our webpage about one of our books getting returned after 90 years. We thought it would be an interesting and amusing way to explain a little about what happens when books are overdue. Little did we know. That afternoon, Jeff Edwards from the Larchmont Patch came and talked to us about the book and took a few pictures. The next morning, this article appeared. We were thrilled the Patch had noticed our post. Little did we know.Read More Read More

Michelina Carbone

Michelina Carbone

Local drug store employee Michelina Carbone loves to read and remembers reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain when she was in high school. She was surprised to hear that, since 1885, the novel is regularly challenged for racial slurs, rough language, and its depiction of slavery. Michelina believes that The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an important book that should continue to be read by high school students.Read More Read More
